Grade 2

Grade 2 students are all over the place when it comes to reading levels or abilities.  Grade 2
students check out 3 books weekly. One must be from the "Everybody" section still because it has a wide range of picture books that offer something for "everybody."  Your son or daughter may come home with a picture book that is seemingly too easy for him or her, so encourage he or she to read it with expression! Your child is also starting to notice what other students check out (particularly thick chapter books).  I have discussions (privately and with classes) about the purpose of checkout (find a book you want to read!) and will allow students free range in book selection.  If you child picks out a book that you feel is too hard or inappropriate, first ask him or her why that book was selected. If you cannot read it aloud with him or her, ask your child to come back to get a book better suited for independent reading.  Please don't think you shouldn't be reading to them if they can independently read.  Reading aloud to your child is so beneficial and a great way to end the day.  I promise you won't regret it and will absolutely miss it when they outgrow it :-(.

PROGRESS REPORTS are issued in March and June in Special Area classes.

Your child will be assessed by the following standards:

  • Students will identify the parts of a book including title, author/illustrator, publisher, copyright date, spine, call number.

  • Students can locate books in the library based on the general location of fiction and nonfiction.

  • Students can gather information, with support, from both print and digital resources.

  • Students can recognize and use Destiny to determine information about a book.
