First graders should check out 3 books weekly and return them to school on his or her library day.  Sometimes these books might seem too easy (that's ok-have your child read to you) or too hard (you can read to him or her).

Great first grade series:  Henry and Mudge (Rylant), Fancy Nancy (O'Connor), Froggy (London), Nate the Great (Sharat), Ivy&Bean(Barrows) and Mercy Watson (DiCamillo).

Progress Reports are issued in March and June in Special Area classes.  In grade 1 your child will be assessed in the following areas:

  • Students can identify title, author and illustrator of a book.

  • Students recognize that alphabetization is one of the organizing characteristics of the library.

  • Students can identify the general location of fiction and nonfiction books in the library.

  • Students can distinguish between fiction and nonfiction books by characteristics.

  • Students can distinguish between fiction and nonfiction books by call number.
